WORK BEGINS ON FIRST PHASE OF $113 MILLION LOUISVILLE PARKS PROJECT – BUSINESS FIRST
Construction began Tuesday on the first phase of The Parklands of Floyds Fork, the nearly 4,000-acre, $113 million parks system being developed by 21st Century Parks Inc.
U.S. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer helped hammer in wooden stakes marking the future site of the Egg Lawn during a ceremonial event held this morning, according to a news release.
The new parks system will be developed along the Floyds Fork watershed in eastern and southeastern Jefferson County.
It will be anchored by four community parks, each named for tributaries of Floyds Fork: Beckley Creek, Pope Lick, Turkey Run and Broad Run.
The project is being funded by a public-private partnership of local donors and federal, state and city governments.
Private contributions total more than $60 million, along with $49.5 million in public funding, the release said. The public funding includes $38 million in federal transportation money.
The Parklands will be built in phases over the next several years, according to the release. Work began Tuesday on the 616-acre, $16 million Beckley Creek Park, which runs from Shelbyville Road, east of Middletown, to South English Station Road and Echo Trail.
