Why Couples Fall in Love With The Parklands for Their Wedding Day

Don’t you love when life’s magical moments come full circle? Since you can’t always see where a path is leading, it can feel wonderful to find joy in place that’s close to where you started. That was certainly true for Chloe and Cooper Gordon, who recently got married and held their reception at the Gheens Foundation Lodge—seven years after their first date at Beckley Creek Park.

From first date to venue tour

While the couple loved the idea of getting married at the place where they first met, they didn’t realize it was even possible until Chloe’s mother sent them a link to information about the Gheens Foundation Lodge. At the time, neither Chloe nor Cooper knew that The Parklands had offered spaces for weddings and other special occasions.

When they toured the Gheens Lodge, they felt almost certain it was where they would say “I do.”

A marriage of functionality and flow

Chloe says she was initially drawn to the venue’s functionality. Right away, she could see that her guests could enter the space without navigating stairs. This was an especially important consideration, as she has an older relative who uses a wheelchair.

She also felt confident in the layout. With the help of Melissa Ensch, Event Coordinator at The Parklands and her main point of contact from our Facilities Team, Chloe was able to clearly envision how the day would unfold in the space.

During their initial site meeting, Melissa walked through potential seating arrangements and offered suggestions to make the space work for the couple’s goals. She later followed up with a layout based on those ideas, refined it with the couple’s feedback, and then shared a final rendering.

Chloe and Cooper ultimately chose a cocktail hour in the lobby, a ceremony in the smaller Parklands Room, and a reception in the larger UPS Great Room. Chloe says everything flowed together perfectly.

That sense of flow is intentional. Melissa notes that the venue is designed to allow guests to move freely from one area to another. Depending on the weather, guests can also step out onto the terrace or adjacent lawn to take in views of the Floyds Fork stream and sunlit park landscapes.

Flexibility to celebrate inside, outside, or both

Chloe says another reason she chose the Gheens Foundation Lodge was the flexibility to host both the ceremony and reception in one place. While an outdoor ceremony sounded lovely, she didn’t want to risk unpredictable March weather.

With floor-to-ceiling windows, she quickly realized she could keep the entire celebration indoors while still enjoying the calm, beauty, and sense of awe that come from being surrounded by nature.

“There are so many windows in the venue that you feel like you’re outside—while enjoying the comfort of being in an elegant, well-designed indoor space,” Chloe says.

Neutral design with room for personalization

Ideally, a wedding venue should complement a couple’s vision, not compete with it.

Chloe says the neutral architectural style of the Gheens Foundation Lodge created a seamless aesthetic. She chose a single color for her wedding—a dusty blue that paired beautifully with the mostly white tablescapes and the venue’s interior design.

Lighting also contributed to the atmosphere of elegant simplicity. Pillar candles were placed throughout the space, while market lights strung overhead added a soft, dreamlike glow—perfect for a wedding celebration.

“Not only does the venue itself offer choices, such as reception layouts to help guests move through the space, but our Facilities Team strives to do the same,” says Melissa. If there’s a detail couples are still deciding on, it doesn’t always have to be finalized the week of the event. We can often make adjustments to help ensure the day goes the way they envision.”

Responsive, thoughtful, and accommodating service

Though she’s been married for only a month, Chloe says she’s already recommended the Gheens Foundation Lodge to newly engaged couples—not just for the space, which she describes as “great, affordable, and so pretty,” but also for the service that comes with it.

Despite rain and other variables, she says the day stayed about 30 minutes ahead of schedule. She credits the attentiveness of the Facilities Team, along with her wedding coordinator, and the venue’s accessibility for helping everything run smoothly.

That attention to detail showed up in small but meaningful ways. For example, Melissa noticed that the guest count didn’t quite align with the number of chairs ordered and reached out to flag it, even though Chloe was using an outside vendor for rentals.

“Melissa was so helpful throughout the process. I’m in the field of HR recruitment, and I can tell when someone really enjoys their work and cares about people.”

Chloe says that level of care continued even after the celebration. The team allowed her to keep a trailer with wedding items on-site following the event, making the post-wedding transition easier.

For her part, Melissa says she was happy to meet Chloe and her husband after the wedding to help coordinate pickup. It gave her the chance to see the couple as newlyweds—a full-circle moment in its own right.

Rewarding, full-circle moments

Now that her wedding is over and she has photos to look back on, Chloe says she keeps thinking about her first date with her husband and how the venue connected them to that special time. She hopes to return to the grounds one day—possibly with children in tow—to revisit those memories.

Melissa says it’s not unusual for couples to return to the site. She’s seen it happen at the Hockensmith Barn in Turkey Run Park as well, where couples often celebrate during warmer months.

For Melissa and others on our Facilities Team, those moments are especially rewarding. At The Parklands, we are honored when couples choose our venues for their wedding celebrations and other milestones. The team strives to be flexible, collaborate closely with coordinators and vendors, and support each event from the earliest planning stages through the final toast—and beyond.
