“STRUCTURES” SUPPLEMENT IN BUSINESS FIRST HIGHLIGHTS PARKLANDS’ BUILDINGS

The Bravura Corp. design team worked together over an eight or nine-month time frame in early 2009 to design the Gheens Foundation Lodge, as well as the PNC Achievement Center for Education and Interpretation, shown in the slide show at right.
The team included designer Shelley Malicki, architect and Bravura president Jim Walters, project architect Nick Passafiumeand designer Jason Crowder.
Walters said the architects pitched their ideas to 21st Century Parks Inc. officials based on the idea that with the park’s rural setting, the buildings ideally would have a modern yet agricultural feel, with plenty of large windows allowing natural light to come in and affording picturesque views.
“The setting of the park is very rich in agrarian history, so we looked at the forms of such structures, the Kentucky tobacco barns and other buildings that go with farms” in creating the lodge’s design, Crowder added.
Passafiume said the building was designed to meet or exceed stringent energy codes with thick insulation on its roof, spray foam insulation inside walls, high performance window glass, ventilated rain screens and other features not seen even a decade ago in the construction industry.
