The Parklands

Staff Spotlight: Jim Miller

What is your role at The Parklands?

My role at The Parklands is to lead the Ranger Team. I am also a CPR instructor, in charge of the alarm system and a coordinator for outside first responders and other employees to help ensure the overall safety of park visitors.

How do you keep The Parklands safe, clean and fun?

The Parklands Rangers help to keep the parks safe by responding to all trouble calls within the area. Being seen and answering visitor questions gives the public a peace of mind to enjoy their experience within The Parklands, helping to make their visit fun. Rangers also make sure to assist in picking up all trash in the parks, which helps to keep The Parklands clean.

What are you most proud of in your work?

I am most proud of the Ranger team as a whole.

What inspires you to come to work every day?

I am always inspired to be able to help and be there for the public.

Which trail would you recommend to a visitor and why?

The trail I would recommend to visitors is Paw Paw Trail in Turkey Run Park. These trails give you a real sense of being out with nature.

What is your favorite “thing to do” at The Parklands and why?

My favorite thing to do is definitely hiking the trails, such as Chinkapin Trail in Turkey Run Park. This is a more difficult hiking trail submerged in the forest of Turkey Run, so it really makes me feel like I’m in the middle of nowhere, which is great.

In your opinion, what makes The Parklands worthy of support?

The Parklands is a valuable asset to the community, being a nearly 4,000 acre park, open 365 days a year and completely free to the public.

How would you say “Thank You” to someone who donates to The Parklands, or who is thinking about donating?

You are the reason this park system continues to be. Your support means a lot to not only staff, but to visitors of the park. Thank you.
