New Hiking Trail Opens in Broad Run Park
A new trail is now open in the Broad Run Park section of The Parklands of Floyds Fork. The Leatherwood Trail is a natural surface, more difficult, hike-only trail that connects to existing trails, including Limestone Gorge and the Louisville Loop. Built by The Parklands trail team, this 0.5-mile trail offers hikers a new, challenging route to extend their trek using a variety of trail combinations.
“The Leatherwood Trail has, what I would consider, one of the more magical winter views in our park system,” said Dan Meece, Trail Experience Team Leader. “When the canopy is at rest, you can see for miles. Other stimulating features are the amazing rock formations and natural waterfalls.”
The main entrance of the trail is located near Big Vista Overlook in Broad Run Park.
The Parklands of Floyds Fork is open from dawn to dusk, 365 days a year. There is no cost to enter and explore the 60+ miles of trails for hiking, biking and paddling. The Parklands of Floyds Fork is a nearly 4,000-acre donor-supported public park system within the Floyds Fork watershed in eastern and southeastern Louisville. The $125 million project was funded through more than $70 million in private donations, combined with almost $50 million from federal, state and local government sources.
