“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing for others?” – Martin Luther King Jr.

Next Monday, January 15th, is Martin Luther King Jr. Day and people across the country are honoring Dr. King’s legacy by turning their day off into a day “on” and volunteering in their communities. Dr. King believed in the power of serving others and the holiday that honors him was named a national day of service by Congress in 1994.

Each year we offer members in our community a chance to spend a few hours volunteering with us at The Parklands on MLK Day. Many people wonder what kind of work we do in the winter and this is a great chance learn more by working side-by-side with members of our Horticulture and Natural areas teams. Last year’s volunteers helped us mulch along the Humana Grand Allee, spread woodchips on the Valley of the Giants Trail, and remove invasive species in Beckley Creek Park.

If you are interested in lending a hand this year, check out the project details below. Never picked up a garden tool before? Don’t worry – our team will provide all of the necessary tools and instruction and no previous experience is necessary. Like Dr. King said “Everyone can be great because everybody can serve.”

We hope to see you there!
