Meet Our New Communications and Marketing Intern

My name is Whitley McGovern and I am a communications and marketing intern at The Parklands for the upcoming months! I am very excited to be able to support the community outreach for such a unique project.

I am currently a senior at the University of Louisville completing my Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication. I decided upon Communication as my major because I have learned that effective communication is an essential aspect of everyday life, both professionally and interpersonally. Plus, it’s interesting to learn about! I have taken classes focused on the communication patterns of specific groups, the methods and effects of mass media, the impact and emergence of communication technology, as well as several other important areas of knowledge. All of the information I have obtained through these courses has proven extremely useful in all areas of my daily life, and most notably in my internship experience thus far.

Some of my favorite things to do are travel, hike, experience and learn about other cultures and languages, and play disc golf, soccer, and tennis. I enjoy just about anything that I get to do outdoors, so working at The Parklands fully accentuates my curiosity.

What I Love About The Parklands

I’ll take a page out of Forrest Gump’s Mama’s book on this: exploring The Parklands is like a box of chocolates; you never know what you might find. Upon adventuring through the park for a comprehensive tour, I was truly in awe of the variation in activities, landscapes, and architectural design. At every trailhead, I saw new and captivating sights—meadows dotted in yellow and purple flowers, children headed down to the creek to illustrate its beauty, and pairs of deer roaming about.

Naturally, I had to head back the following weekend to further investigate what I had witnessed on my tour. I decided to hike Limestone Gorge, following it to Leatherwood Trail, and ended my journey with the Moss Gibbs Woodland Garden. The trails combined an appropriate amount of difficulty with a perfect amount of scenery, and the Woodland Garden brought me back to my childhood, as I felt as if I was strolling through The Secret Garden

I can’t wait to see more of The Parklands and what this wonderful opportunity will teach me. I will be writing about a diverse set of topics, so be on the lookout for more fascinating information that The Parklands has to offer!
