On fair-weather days, parking is a hot commodity at The Parklands. More and more Louisville and regional residents are learning about our new, donor-supported park system. They’re hearing about the spraygrounds, playgrounds, sports fields, fishing lakes and stream. They’re checking out our trails for hiking, biking and paddling. They’re registering children for Wednesday Wonders and science camps where they get to learn and explore in the Outdoor Classroom.
From spring through fall, our parks are especially busy as folks gather to celebrate weddings, birthdays, reunions and more, taking advantage of scenic venues and sprayground-adjacent pavilions. Just like Membership donations and camp registrations, income from facility rentals goes directly back into supporting annual operations, keeping The Parklands safe, clean, fun and beautiful for ALL visitors.
During larger events, event staff close off sections of our parking lots at Creekside Center in Beckley Creek Park and Brown-Forman Silo Center in Turkey Run Park. Closing off these lots helps to ensure event guests have access to parking.
To minimize any inconvenience, we try to keep lot closures as tightly scheduled as possible; however, with long summer days upon us, visitors can expect to encounter these closures more often as they’re looking to cool off at Marshall Sprayground, or check out the view from the top of Silo Lookout.
Each event is different, so time and duration of closures vary. Below are a few tips to help you prepare for your next trip:
- Carpool. If you are meeting up with friends or know other families who frequent the park, see if they want to meet up to drive over together.
- Embrace adventure! The majority of our lot closures take place in the late afternoon on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Consider scheduling your ride in the early morning to avoid closures. If you’re set on an afternoon visit, use the closure as an excuse to explore another section of the park. Take a scenic drive to another parking location and check out a new trail. Have you rode the Seaton Valley Trail in Turkey Run or Karst Climb in Broad Run Park?
- Keep an eye on the Kiosks. Pavilion rental calendars are posted on bulletin boards throughout The Parklands. Look for lot closure notices to be listed in our monthly event calendars near the restrooms at Creekside Center and Brown-Forman Silo Center.
- Stay in between the lines. While it might be tempting to pull into that open, grassy knoll, the men and women of our operations team work hard to maintain our lawns and gardens. Visitors who stick to designated parking areas help make sure those spaces are safe from damage.
Thanks for your patience as we help our customers create long-lasting memories of their special occasions!
