Prairie Preserve

Pope Lick Park

In the southern portion of Pope Lick Park is the Prairie Preserve — a meadow that displays a range of Bluegrass habitats, from riparian forests to former agricultural fields now turned into prairie. After crossing the bridge on the Louisville Loop, take a left at the fork, following the gravel path to view sprawling prairies and explore creek beds that cross the trail.

Both the Prairie Preserve and the Big Beech Woods, formerly known as the Tyler Schooling property, were purchased with the Kentucky Heritage Land Conservation Fund and will be preserved in their natural states to provide habitats for native fauna. The trail that loops around this pasture is great for bird- and wildlife-watching.
