Fall Watchlist

As cooler weather approaches, some might be preparing for a season of binge watching Netflix, but we encourage visitors to get outside and enjoy the wonders of the cooler seasons. Here are a few items to add to your Fall Watchlist.

1. Multiple bald eagle sightings in September have visitors with their eyes to the skies. With the leaves falling, now is a great time to spot eagles and other raptors. Also, keep your eye out for migratory birds passing through on their way to warmer weather.

Where to watch: Explore along the creek or in any open meadow for birds of prey. Pope Lick Park and the Humana Grand Allee in Beckley Creek Park are common stops for migrating birds.

2. Spider webs are commonly featured in Halloween decor, but the style of web depends on the vibe. For a haunted, abandoned house, try a cobweb. To create a magical atmosphere, go with the circular-grid pattern created by orb weavers.

Where to watch: Look for these majestic creations hanging from sturdy structures or strewn across wildflowers. A misty-early morning visit makes them easier to spot.

3. Of course, Fall Foliage is more than enough reason to visit this season. Enjoy fall colors with a hike in any of our four parks, including The Strand.

Where to watch: Sky Dome and Silo Lookout in Turkey Run Park offer two great views. Explore Limestone Gorge and Leatherwood Trails in Broad Run Park for a show and a workout.
