It is always a welcomed sight to view the birds at the feeders during the cold, dreary autumn days that proceed the winter. The site of the bright red cardinal, the Red-bellied Woodpecker or the gradual molting of the American Goldfinch can bring intrigue and wonder. This project is quick and easy and is sure to attract several different species of birds to your window. Follow the steps below to make your own pine cone bird feeder or enjoy a hike to the PNC Center at Creekside in Beckley Creek Park to view the feeders we placed on the container Hollies located on the walkway in the parking lot.

Let’s get started!

Step 1.  Gather pine cones that have fallen to the ground.

Step 2.  Carefully tie a piece of yarn in a loop around the top of the pine cone.

Step 3.  Use a spoon (or fingers) to spread the peanut butter onto the pinecone.  Make sure to get the mixture into the open areas of the pinecone.

Step 4.  Place the birdseed in a pie tin, paper plate or other shallow dish, once the pinecone is covered with peanut butter press and roll the pinecone into the birdseed.

Step 5.  Hang your pinecone feeder in a tree just outside your favorite viewing window. Enjoy!!

Karen has worked at the Parklands of Floyds Fork in many capacities. Originally hired as an Attendant in 2013, she has also worked in the PNC Achievement Center at the front desk and The Gheens Foundation Lodge as an Event Concierge. As of September 1, 2014 she has taken on the position as Head Zone Gardener. Karen is a graduate of Eastern Kentucky University with a Bachelor degree in Technical Horticulture and a minor in Floriculture. For the past fifteen years she has been actively involved in providing a hands-on atmosphere for her husband and three children. During this time she maintained a successful, profitable small business as a lawn maintenance contractor as well as a private residential gardener. Along with a passion to make a difference, Karen shares the same enthusiasm as her colleagues, as they continue to contribute to the growth and progress of The Parklands of Floyds Fork. When not at the Parklands, Karen enjoys spending time with her family, pets and just being in the outdoors.
