Discover the Parklands – Hike a Trail

There are a variety of things you and your family can do at The Parklands this spring. From playing on the playground, cooling down on the sprayground (water will be turned on May 1!), fishing at William F. Miles Lakes, riding bikes on the Louisville Loop, playing with your dog in the Barklands or exploring one of our many trails. The possibilities are endless.

Hiking with your friends and family is a fun way to stay healthy, build relationships, and discover the flora and fauna of The Parklands. We have a variety of trails that meet the needs of all our visitors. If you are looking for a woodsy trail with moderate elevation then check out the Coppiced Woods Trail in Beckley Creek Park. If you want a trail that borders the fork with little elevation change and a mix of shady and sunny spots, then the Black Willow Trail in Beckley Creek Park is for you! Each trail is unique and considered a special place here at The Parklands. Stop by the PNC Achievement Center to pick up your park map and ask our Interpretive Rangers about one of our many trails.

My personal favorite trail is the Big Beech Trail in Pope Lick Park, because of its semi- remote area and guaranteed sightings of wildlife. From deer, to birds, to squirrels to frogs, I always spot something new on the trail.

Come on out to The Parklands and pick a trail to explore with your friends and family. If your children have an interest in exploring more of The Parklands, then I would recommend signing up for one, two or all three of our Spring Break Hiking Adventure Day Camps!

Spring Break Adventure Day Camps

New this year – these camps will bring out the nature explorer in each of you. These camps are designed for students entering k-6 grades. Each day we will hike a different trail as we “get outside and play” amongst the first signs of spring.

Learn your way around The Parklands with our knowledgeable interpretive staff, as we guide you into some of the special places within The Parklands. We will show you where to look for salamanders, spring peepers, birds of prey and other wildlife… knowledge that will enhance future hiking adventures and make you sure to impress your friends.

See below for individual day camp dates. Register for one, two or all three days at the link below:
