2018 MLK Day of Service Recap

Every year on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day we invite our park visitors to spend a morning volunteering with us, turning their day off into a day “on”. Our originally scheduled project was canceled due to snow, but our volunteers still showed up in force on our rescheduled date of Monday, February 19, which turned out to be a balmy, 70-degree day.

Our mission was to cut back all of the native grasses in the Creekside Center in Beckley Creek Park, focusing our efforts around the PNC Achievement Center and the Gheens Foundation Lodge. With the help of our dedicated volunteers, we filled up two dump trucks with grass clippings, which will be turned into compost for later use in the park. In 3 hours, we were able to complete a task that would normally take our small (but mighty) garden team a full week to finish. That’s powerful stuff!

If you are interested in volunteering with our garden team for a project this spring, check out a full listing of upcoming opportunities on our volunteer page here. We hope to see you out in the park soon!
